How should the UK approach the development of CCS technology?

Until 2016, the UK government was an enthusiastic backer of carbon capture and storage technology, with a competition in place to develop industrial CCS at a commercial scale with a promised £1bn funding on offer to support design, construction and operation. When funding was withdrawn as part of George Osborne’s last budget as Chancellor, some £100m had already been spent, but both projects being developed under the competition have now collapsed.
