UKCCSRC Annual ECR Meeting 2016

The UKCCSRC Annual ECR Meeting 2016 will take place in Edinburgh on Tuesday 13 September 2016 (on the margins of the UKCCSRC biannual meeting), from 11:00 to 17:15, followed by a networking dinner at 19:00.

 

Objective of meeting:

Provide training to support ECRs in developing their general communications and presentation skills.

 

Draft Agenda:

Welcome and Introduction

Ciara O’Connor, UKCCSRC, will give a short introduction to the objectives of the meeting and run through the proposed format.

11:10– 11:40

Getting to Know You

ECR participants of the meeting will be expected to give short, 1min. introduction to their research by way of introducing themselves and their area of expertise to the group.

11:40– 12:20

The Importance of Good Communications

Invited speakers representing industry, funding bodies, academia and the general public will give short presentations on the importance of good communications skills from the perspectives of these different stakeholder groups.

12:20– 13:00

Communications Workshop

Kirsty Anderson, Principal Manager, Public Engagement, at the Global CCS Institute, will lead this session designed to support ECR participants of the meeting in developing their communications and presentation skills.

Group work: Pitch Challenge

ECR participants of the meeting will work in small groups, with some expert support from presenters, to develop a pitch for a research project which will be judged by members of the UKCCSRC Independent Advisory Panel.

Networking dinner

All meeting attendees are invited to join a networking dinner in central Edinburgh.

Funding:

Funding is available to support standard class return travel to the meeting, accommodation, and subsistence for the meeting. For this meeting, accommodation costs will be covered for the night of Tuesday 13 September, to allow ECRs to stay on for the UKCCSRC Biannual Meeting, and for the night of Monday 12 September where distance does not allow attendees to travel to Edinburgh on the morning of the meeting. ECRs requiring additional nights of accommodation in order to attend the main biannual meeting, and who have not been successful in securing additional funding for this via the ECR Meeting Fund for the biannual meeting, will need to cover additional nights’ accommodation themselves.

Applicants should note that awards will be reimbursed at 80% FEC recovery rate by invoice from their institution - please see the T&Cs for full details. Referees will be asked to confirm acknowledgement of this in the referee form.

 

Application Process:

Applicants must:

  1. Apply online via the form linked below, and
  2. Ensure that they or their supervisor/manager submits the Referee Form downloadable here) by email to the Network Manager at [email protected] 

before noon (UK time) Friday 2 September 2016. Applicants will be asked in the online application to upload print-out quotes or statements used in their estimate of expenditure.

 

Eligibility Criteria:

  1. Applicants must be a member of the UK CCS Research Centre or CCS Community Network.
  2. Applicants must be working or studying in the CCS field within the UK academic community at an eligible organisation at the time of application and for the duration of the proposed activity. 
  3. Student applicants must be completing a postgraduate research degree programme in a CCS topic at a UK university or research institute eligible to receive RCUK funding.
  4. Any other applicants must hold a permanent or fixed-term contract of employment at a UK university or research institute eligible to receive RCUK funding.
  5. Academic and research staff applicants must meet the (non-technical) conditions for eligibility for the EPSRC first grant scheme. These include that applicants must normally have completed their PhD or equivalent professional qualification within 10 years of the time the application is submitted.  Academic staff wishing to apply should also normally have been appointed to their first lecturer or equivalent position within the previous 36 months, or still be within the probation period associated with the new appointment. 
  6. This scheme is not intended to be used to extend or supplement an existing fellowship: potential applicants who hold a personal fellowship should contact the Network Manager at [email protected] or call Ciara O’Connor on 0131 650 8564 to clarify their proposal intentions before submitting an application.
  7. Applications must be made by the applicant, but must be supported in writing by their supervisor or line manager.
