The ChemEng Discovery Space allows students and industry professionals alike to benefit from an unparalleled hands-on educational experience, with the four-storey high state-of-the-art carbon dioxide capture pilot plant (~500T/yr) representing a scaled-down chemical engineering plant. The centrepiece of the facility is the show-stopping ABB control room, accompanied by the installation of several brand new laboratories kitted out with the latest chemical engineering teaching equipment. Qatar CCS Mulitscale Imaging Laboratory
This lab is dedicated to the imaging of flow in porous media at reservoir conditions at different length scales using X-ray Computer-aided Tomography (CT). This includes a bespoke petrographic X-ray CT that can record images in either horizontal or vertical orientations, and high pressure apparatus that allow for the controlled flow of CO2 and brines at extreme temperatures and pressures with or without chemical reaction. We use a micro-CT specially adapted to recreate reservoir conditions, using flow experiments to visualise the arrangement of fluids and pore scale imaging of rock structures with a resolution of around 1 micron. We aim to focus on the impact of pore-scale processes and controls for large scale phenomena such as capillary trapping, changes in wettability and reactive transport. These images go hand-in-hand with our pore-scale modelling research that can utilise approaches from a wide spectrum of techniques depending on the research hypothesis, and will ensure Imperial will be known globally as the home of the Digital Rocks revolution. Qatar Thermophysics Laboratory
This lab is dedicated to the study of fundamental physics and chemistry to improve our understanding of carbon sequestration and CO2-driven enhanced oil recovery. There are presently significant gaps in our knowledge concerning the thermophysical properties that are basic input parameters for reservoir simulators and the building blocks of quality predictive simulations of CO2 storage. The laboratory houses customised high pressure, high temperature (HPHT) equipment to provide high accuracy experimental data for brine/CO2/hydrocarbon systems under reservoir conditions. The properties studied include phase equilibria, density, interfacial tension, contact angle, viscosity and diffusion coefficients. The HPHT equipment for use with brines and high pressure gases, much of which is built in house, requires specialist designs, materials and operating procedures. More info
Qatar Complex Porous Media Laboratory
The lab is dedicated to the experimental characterisation of flows and gas-solid equilibria in complex porous media, including reservoir rocks, with relevance to CO2 storage and hydrocarbon recovery operations. More info
