Launch of On Net Zero – a new publication from Policy@Manchester, calling for a re-think in the UK approach to our net zero target

We’re delighted to share some very exciting news from one of our core research team, Dr Clair Gough, on her report as part of On Net Zero, the latest publication from Policy@Manchester. Clair, along with colleague Dr Andrew Welfle, wrote a report on negative emissions for the publication.

Launched today, On Net Zero provides thought leadership pieces and expert analysis on important climate issues such as carbon offsetting, carbon emissions in transportation, fuel poverty and renewable energy to name a few. To accompany the publication Policy@Manchester has also produced a COVID-19 update – reflecting the impact of the pandemic on various sectors and what this means for the UK decarbonisation agenda.

The full report including COVID-19 updates can be read as a digital version.

Some of the recommendations in On Net Zero include:

  • Establishing CCS in the five industrial clusters is critical to delivering carbon dioxide removal through BECCS.
  • Evaluating and justifying the equity implications of which emissions are deemed too difficult to reduce.
  • Changing perceptions of the shipping sector as being ‘difficult to decarbonise’, even over the short time horizon dictated by the Paris Agreement.

Congratulations to all all involved – it’s a very interesting read.
