IRC – Call 4

Call 4 of the UKCCSRC International Research Collaboration Fund was launched on 6 May 2016.

Recipients of the fourth round of funding were:

Prof Mike Bickle (University of Cambridge)
Travel to the USA to work with Prof James Evans (Department of Geology, Utah State University) investigating the mineralogical, geochemical and geomechanical consequences of long-term exposure of CO₂-gases and CO₂-SO4-charged waters on fault zone materials.

Dr Carolina Font Palma (University of Chester)
Travel to Mexico to work with Zdzislaw Mazur Czerwiec(National Institute of Electricity and Clean Energy – NEEL) on the planning of an experimental campaign for a micro gas turbine with post-combustion using process simulation techniques.

Dr Giorgos Papageorgiou (University of Edinburgh)
Travel to Australia to work with Prof Boris Gurevich (Department of Exploration Geophysics, Curtin University) to work on the assessment of how the fluid distribution in the pore space affects the pushdown effect and whether its frequency and azimuth dependence can be utilised to quantify the amount of stored CO₂ in future stages of the Otway project.

Prof Mohamed Pourkashanian (University of Sheffield)
Travel to Malaysia to work with Dr Azmi Mohd Shariff (Department of Chemical Engineering, Universiti Teknologi Petronas) on comparing UK and Malaysian approaches to CfD modelling to inform packed-bed column for CO₂ capture; and safe operation of pilot plants.

Dr David Reiner (University of Cambridge)
Travel to Canada to work with Prof Jeremy Rayner (Johnson Shoyama Graduate School of Public Policy, University of Saskatchewan) to carry a series of interviews, focus groups, citizen juries in both Estevan/Saskatoon/Regina and Peterhead/Aberdeen/London to build up a richer picture of public attitudes towards CCS.

Dr Jennifer Roberts (University of Strathclyde)
Travel to Australia to work with Dr Linda Stalker (National Gesequestration Laboratory) and Dr Andrew Feitz (Geoscience Australia) to facilitate knowledge exchange on measuring CO₂ flux and quantifying CO₂ release at CO₂ injection/release experiments, natural CO₂ seep systems and laboratory simulations, and initiate collaborative links with Geoscience Australia/CO₂CRC and strengthen the ongoing collaboration between NGL and UKCCSRC researchers at the University of Strathclyde.

Dr Vivian Scott (Unviversity of Edinburgh)
Travel to Germany to work with Dr Jessica Strefler and Dr. Nico Bauer (both at Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research – PIK) on bringing together expertise in CCS development and deployment, and CO₂ storage properties, scales and availabilities with the team working on CCS representation in the REMIND Integrated Assessment Model at PIK.

Dr Janos Szuhanszki (University of Sheffield)
Travel to South Korea to visit Prof Chang-Keun Yi of the Climate Change Research Division at the The Korea Institute of Energy Research) for knowledge exchange purposes.

Prof Yong Yan (University of Kent)
Travel to China to work with Professor Shi Liu (School of Control and Computer Engineering, North China Electric Power University – NCEPU) to carry out an extensive experimental programme on the CO₂ flow metering rig built for the UKCCSRC Call 2 Project “CO₂ Flow Metering through Multi-Modal Sensing and Statistical Data Fusion”, situated in the NCEPU, to answer some of the unanswered questions brought up during the project.

Dr Yinfang Zhou (University of Aberdeen)
Travel to Australia to visit Associate Prof Stefan Iglauer (Department of Petroleum Engineering, Curtin University) to investigate the local wettability variation and its impact on flow both from direct imaging and pore scale modelling.

Salary/Contract amount/Funds available:
Awards will be available up to a maximum of £25,000 to cover travel costs and where applicable, up to six months of staff time. Applicants who make a particularly strong case for an amount exceeding these limits will be considered on a case by case basis.
