Webinar: The Bunter Sandstone Formation – CO₂ storage in an extensive hydraulically-connected saline aquifer
15 June 2023 @ 14:00 - 15:30
BGS, IDRIC and SCCS are hosting a webinar on The Bunter Sandstone Formation – CO₂ storage in an extensive hydraulically-connected saline aquifer on Thursday, 15 June from 2.00 pm to 3.30 pm.
The Bunter Sandstone Formation (BSF) is a primary target for planned CO2 sequestration projects in the Southern North Sea, UK. The BSF provides a storage option for many of the blocks offered in the North Sea Transition Authority (NSTA) 1st carbon storage licensing round and is expected to play a crucial role in decarbonising the UK’s major industrial hubs, such as Teesside and Humberside.
This webinar will focus on the current understanding of the Bunter Sandstone Formation, highlighting the structural and geomechanical controls that will influence storage development. These geological constraints will be considered alongside the UK regulatory framework and the requirement for strategic use of the subsurface to deliver the Government’s net-zero ambitions. A series of presentations, from the British Geological Survey, industry and other key stakeholders, will explore these topics. Subsequently, the main challenges and uncertainties faced in the development of storage projects in the Bunter Sandstone Formation will be considered, reviewed and debated by an expert panel.
There will also be an opportunity for attendees to take part in a dedicated Q&A session with the panel of presenters after the talks. The webinar is open to all, and anyone interested in current and future CO2 storage development in the UK is encouraged to attend.
