Gearóid FitzGerald, Commercial CCS Manager, Ervia spoke on the Cork CCS project as an innovative technology that is key to decarbonizing Ireland’s energy industry. FitzGerald emphasized the role of CCS as a critical pathway in decarbonizing electricity generation in Ireland, because no other technology visible today can provide long-term and low-carbon peak supply of electricity at scale in Ireland. Carbon capture and storage (CCS) has widely been considered as the only technology available that can achieve deep reductions in carbon emissions from both power generation and industrial processes. However, despite the progress achieved so far, the large energy penalty of CO 2 capture with existing technologies, which represents the most costly single element of the whole CCS chain, still remains a major performance barrier. This blog was provided by Li Anne Cheah, a PhD student at the Heriot-Watt University, whose attendance at the 2019 Winter School was supported by the UK CCS Research Centre (UKCCSRC). The 2019 winter school took place in the Halifax Hall, Sheffield from 12th to 14th February. The researchers involved, ranging from 1st year PhD/EngD students to research fellow, were from the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in CCS and Cleaner Fossil Energy and UKCCSRC. Introduction The 2019 Winter School held by EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in CCS and CFE aims to help early career researchers to develop their knowledge and capacity to apply research in conventional fossil fuel energy and carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies to global problems. The training course also aims to develop their understanding of technical and social issues of energy, the environment and climate change in the UK.
