On 11 June 2020 at 3.30pm UK time, Caspar Donnison, PhD Researcher, University of Southampton & University of California, Davis, is leading an online seminar, “Finding the win-wins for Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS) as we move to net zero”, via Microsoft teams.
Background:
There has been a growing interest in the use of bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) to achieve a net reduction in greenhouse gases, but limited research concerning the spatial environmental and social impacts of this technology. We develop a land-use optimisation tool which integrates environmental and social values in order to better understand the costs and benefits of BECCS.
Using the UK as a case study, we find the impact of BECCS upon environmental services is dependent upon both scale and location. We discuss the optimal locations shown by our results, the sustainable limit of BECCS deployment, and what the implications are for achieving net zero emissions in the UK. These results are important for policymakers as they plan energy scenarios consistent with the Paris Agreement whilst supporting environmental policy.
