The Committee on Climate Change (CCC) this morning published a letter to the Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, The Rt Hon Amber Rudd MP, setting out the implications of the Paris Agreement for the Fifth Carbon Budget. The Committee provided its advice to Government on the recommended level of the Fifth Carbon Budget (which covers the period 2028-2032) on 26 November 2015.
The letter includes the Committee’s initial reaction to the cancellation of £1 billion of funding for the UK’s Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) commercialisation programme.
It states that CCS is crucial to cost-effective decarbonisation and calls on Parliament, in light of the Paris Agreement, to ‘develop urgently a new approach to CCS in the UK‘.
